Who is this round trip through Rio, Iguaçu and Bahia for?

In short

The 16 days combine three Brazilian classics: Rio de Janeiro with the Sugarloaf and Corcovado, the Iguaçu Falls on the border with Argentina, and Salvador with the Pelourinho. Add to that the colonial town of Paraty and hikes in the Chapada Diamantina. The trip suits first-time visitors who enjoy cities, nature and easy hikes; the best time to travel is August to October.

Along the way, big city, coast, waterfall and highlands alternate. Of the 13 nights, six fall on Rio and Salvador, the rest on the small towns of Paraty and Lençóis and on Foz do Iguaçu. The location changes on five days, twice with around 7 hours on a bus between Salvador and the Chapada. Four stops are UNESCO World Heritage sites: the landscape of Rio (2012), Paraty with Ilha Grande (2019), the old town of Salvador (1985) and Iguaçu National Park (1986).

  • Well suited for: travelers visiting Brazil for the first time who want to see city, culture and nature on one route.
  • For hikers: the Chapada Diamantina offers tours from a few hours to multi-day treks; the classic hike to the Cachoeira da Fumaça is 5 km long.
  • Less suited for: anyone mainly wanting to swim, since there are hardly any pure beach days; anyone who avoids long bus rides; and anyone who wants to walk alone through city centers at night, which both the FDFA and the Federal Foreign Office advise against in Rio and Salvador.

The pace is normal: except on travel days, there is one main activity planned per day, and the rest stays free. Those who prefer more rest can drop Paraty and gain two days (see variants).

Health: healthytravel.ch recommends the yellow fever vaccination for the entire state of Rio de Janeiro, which includes Paraty, as well as for visits to the Iguaçu Falls; in Bahia the recommendation applies only to parts of the state. Switzerland's Expert Committee for Travel Medicine advises considering yellow fever protection for all regions of Brazil. Malaria: no risk in the cities of Rio and Salvador, low risk at the Iguaçu Falls and in the rest of the country. Clarify vaccinations and mosquito protection with a doctor.

How is the route structured and how do you travel between places?

In short

The trip begins in Rio, continues by bus or transfer 258 km to Paraty and back to Galeão Airport, from where GOL and LATAM fly nonstop to Foz do Iguaçu. Then it's on to Salvador with a connection, then 430 km by bus to Lençóis and back again. The return flight departs from Salvador.

Why this order: Rio is the natural gateway, because international flights arrive there or in São Paulo. Paraty has no airport and only makes sense as a side trip from Rio; the way back therefore ends directly at Galeão Airport, from which Foz can be reached without a connection. Since there is no nonstop flight between Foz and Salvador, a connecting day is needed anyway.

The Chapada Diamantina comes at the end, because the bus from Lençóis takes 7 hours and does not combine well with a long-haul flight on the same day. The last night in Salvador creates this buffer. The route does not plan travel after dark: the Federal Foreign Office and the BMEIA advise against overland travel at night.

Day by day

  1. 01

    Day 1

    Departure to Rio de Janeiro

    Departure → Rio de Janeiro

The journey begins at your own departure airport and ends at Rio de Janeiro–Galeão Airport (GIG), which FlightConnections lists with nonstop flights to 58 destinations in 18 countries (as of September 2026). From Europe, TAP flies from Lisbon, Air France from Paris, Lufthansa from Frankfurt, KLM from Amsterdam and Iberia from Madrid direct to Rio, among others; from North America there are connections from Miami, Atlanta, Houston and New York, from the Middle East from Dubai, plus routes to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia. Anyone who cannot find a direct flight to Rio flies to São Paulo–Guarulhos, which is connected to 118 destinations in 30 countries, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Addis Ababa, Doha and Toronto, and takes a domestic flight from there. Carry-on luggage should include your passport, which must still be valid for at least six months on entry, and your vaccination record. When transferring within Brazil, you collect your luggage at the first airport in the country, clear customs, and check it in again for the domestic flight; allow enough connecting time for this.

  2. 02

Day 2 · Overnight: Rio de Janeiro

    Arrival in Rio de Janeiro

Galeão Airport → Rio de Janeiro

Whether nonstop or via São Paulo: you land at Galeão, 20 km north of downtown. Austria's BMEIA recommends landing in Rio before 8 pm whenever possible and taking taxis only from the official counter in the terminal; the generator therefore schedules a transfer to the hotel. At the immigration desk, take a look at the stamp: occasionally border officers note a shorter period than 90 days by hand. Rio is on UTC−3 year-round, since Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019. The first afternoon is for arriving, for example with a walk along the beach promenade and an early dinner. Valuables stay in the safe: Germany's Federal Foreign Office describes robberies even during the day and advises against going to the beach at night.

  3. 03

Day 3 · Overnight: Rio de Janeiro

    Sugarloaf and Guanabara Bay

    Rio de Janeiro

The cable car to the Sugarloaf starts at Praia Vermelha, stops at Morro da Urca and takes passengers up to the 396 m summit in a second section; the first stretch already opened in 1912. It runs daily from 8:30 am to 9 pm, with the last ascent at 7:30 pm. The day ticket costs from R$ 205 (as of September 2026), covers both sections and is sold on the official website. Anyone wanting to experience the sunset over the bay goes up in the late afternoon and spends the morning at Copacabana or Ipanema. From above you look over the landscape between mountains and sea that UNESCO added to the World Heritage list in 2012. Take only swimwear, some cash and a copy of your passport to the beach.

  4. 04

Day 4 · Overnight: Rio de Janeiro

    Corcovado and Tijuca Forest

    Rio de Janeiro

The rack railway, in operation since 1884, departs from the base station at Rua Cosme Velho 513 and climbs through the forest to Corcovado; it carries more than 1.5 million passengers a year. At the top stands the 30 m tall Christ the Redeemer statue, inaugurated in 1931. Adults pay R$ 134, children aged 7 to 11 pay R$ 107, and under-6s ride free (as of September 2026); tickets are available online, in the app, by phone or through partner hotels. Around the mountain lies the Tijuca massif, which rises to 1,021 m and is part of the World Heritage site. The afternoon is free. For those going out in the evening: Germany's Federal Foreign Office reports that drinks have repeatedly been spiked with knockout drops in Lapa and at Pedra do Sal, so never let your glass out of your hand. The Office advises avoiding favelas altogether, including as part of organized tours.

  5. 05

    Day 5 · Overnight: Paraty

By bus to the Costa Verde

Rio de Janeiro → Paraty (258 km)

Paraty lies 258 km from Rio along the BR-101 coastal road. The timetable of Costa Verde Transportes lists twelve departures from Rio between 4 am and 9 pm, with the journey taking about 4 hours; alternatively the generator books a private transfer. A morning bus gets you there while it is still light. Paraty's bus station is about 500 m from the historic center, where cars and trucks are banned; suitcases roll poorly over the rough cobblestones, so a backpack or a luggage trolley helps. Paraty was founded in 1597 and formally raised to town status in 1667. In the late 17th century, the Caminho do Ouro, the route along which gold was shipped to Europe, ended here. In the evening it is worth strolling through the 18th-century street layout, which survives to this day.

  6. 06

    Day 6 · Overnight: Paraty

    Islands and bays off Paraty

    Paraty

According to Wikivoyage, the bay of Ilha Grande contains more than 300 islands; small boats for a day on the water can be chartered at the river mouth near the town center. Since 2019, Paraty and Ilha Grande have been on the UNESCO list as a cultural and natural heritage site, and behind the coast the Serra da Bocaina rises above 2,000 m. Those who prefer to stay on land take the local bus, which according to Wikivoyage runs roughly hourly, to Trindade, 30 km to the south. Paraty is also a cachaça region: in 1820 more than 150 distilleries operated here, and since 2007 the origin designation has been protected. Once a month, at full moon and high tide, seawater flows through openings into the old town's alleys, usually only 15 to 25 cm deep; wet feet come with the territory then.

  7. 07

Day 7 · Overnight: Foz do Iguaçu

    Onward to Foz do Iguaçu

Paraty → Rio de Janeiro (Galeão) → Foz do Iguaçu

Today is a travel day. Rio is about 4 hours away, plus the way to Galeão Airport, 20 km north of downtown; the flight to Foz do Iguaçu should therefore depart no earlier than the afternoon. GOL and LATAM fly nonstop from Galeão to Foz (as of September 2026); the generator searches live for the specific connection. Foz do Iguaçu Airport is 13 km from the city center; a transfer takes you to the hotel. Important for the next day: tickets for the national park are only available online, with a fixed date and time window, and numbers are limited. Anyone who has not already booked them with the trip reserves an early entry slot now at the latest.

  8. 08

Day 8 · Overnight: Foz do Iguaçu

The Iguaçu Falls from the Brazilian side

    Foz do Iguaçu

Iguaçu National Park has existed since 1939, protects 185,000 ha of Atlantic rainforest and has been a World Heritage site since 1986. The falls are almost 3 km wide and plunge up to 80 m. From the visitor center, the park bus, included in the ticket, runs to the roughly 1.5 km Trilha das Cataratas, which passes viewpoints on its way to the walkway in front of the Garganta do Diabo (Devil's Throat); the park administration allows about two hours for this classic circuit. Entry is weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm, weekends from 8:30 am, and the park closes at 5:30 pm. At midday there is the Porto Canoas restaurant inside the park. In the afternoon, the Parque das Aves right next to the park entrance fits well, open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with walk-through aviaries for birds of the Atlantic rainforest. You will get wet on the walkway: pack your camera and phone waterproof.

  9. 09

Day 9 · Overnight: Salvador da Bahia

    Itaipu and flight to Salvador

Foz do Iguaçu → São Paulo or Brasília → Salvador da Bahia

Depending on departure time, the morning is left for the Itaipu hydroelectric plant on the Rio Paraná, on the border with Paraguay. The "Itaipu Panorâmica" tour takes about 1 h 10 min and departs daily between 8:30 am and 4 pm; the plant has 20 generating units with a combined 14,000 MW and has been supplying power since 1984. There is currently no direct flight from Foz to Salvador: Salvador is missing from Foz Airport's destination list, and Foz from Salvador's. You change planes at a hub served by both airports, such as São Paulo, Brasília, Curitiba or Rio (as of September 2026). Depending on the connection, you reach Salvador in the afternoon or evening. Switzerland's FDFA reports gang conflicts in Bahia, including in Salvador, and advises taking taxis instead of walking after dark; from the airport it therefore continues with the booked transfer to the accommodation.

  10. 10

Day 10 · Overnight: Salvador da Bahia

    Pelourinho and the Upper Town

    Salvador da Bahia

Salvador was the capital of the Portuguese colony from 1549 to 1763 and, from 1558, the first slave market of the New World. The Upper Town with the Pelourinho sits on an escarpment about 85 m above the Bay of All Saints and has been a World Heritage site since 1985. A walk leads to the Church and Convent of São Francisco, built from 1708 to 1723: inside, walls, pillars and ceilings are covered with gilded woodcarving, and around 55,000 tiles hang throughout the complex, about 35,000 of them in the cloister. The Elevador Lacerda, opened in 1873, takes you down to the Lower Town in about 30 seconds over a drop of 72 m. UNESCO has listed the capoeira circle, both fight and dance, as intangible cultural heritage since 2014. At midday an acarajé or a moqueca fits well. After dark, the same rule applies here too: take a taxi rather than walk.

  11. 11

    Day 11 · Overnight: Lençóis

    Overland to the Chapada Diamantina

Salvador da Bahia → Lençóis (430 km)

Lençóis, the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina, lies 430 km inland. Real Expresso/Rápido Federal buses depart three times a day, morning, afternoon and evening, from the bus station in Salvador, which is about 20 km from the airport; the journey takes around 7 hours. The morning bus is the best choice: it gets you to Lençóis in daylight, and the authorities advise against overland travel at night. With a private transfer, the route runs via the BR-324, the BR-116 and later the BR-242; for unpaved sections, Melhores Destinos recommends a higher-clearance vehicle. In the evening in town, confirm the guide for the next two days, buy water and provisions, and lay out sturdy hiking boots. A flashlight belongs in every day pack.

  12. 12

    Day 12 · Overnight: Lençóis

    To the Cachoeira da Fumaça

Lençóis → Vale do Capão → Lençóis

Chapada Diamantina National Park covers 152,000 ha in the Serra do Sincorá, with Atlantic rainforest, cerrado and caatinga. There is no entrance fee, but ICMBio recommends a Condutor de Visitantes, since the trails are barely marked and there is no mobile signal in the park. Today the Cachoeira da Fumaça is on the program, whose water, according to ICMBio, falls about 380 m. The hike to the top edge begins in the village of Campos in the Vale do Capão, municipality of Palmeiras, is 5 km long and takes about 2 hours; the Vale do Capão guides' association is based near the trailhead. Those with time also climb Morro do Pai Inácio; the trail starts at the municipal nature park of the same name on the BR-242. ICMBio warns: never hike alone, wear sturdy shoes, and never jump into pools whose depth you don't know.

  13. 13

    Day 13 · Overnight: Lençóis

    Marimbus and trails around Lençóis

    Lençóis → Remanso → Lençóis

The Marimbus is considered the "Pantanal of the Chapada Diamantina", a wetland with flooded plains explored by canoe. The usual tour starts in the Quilombola community of Remanso and takes about 4 hours to reach the Rio Roncador. Those who prefer to walk go with a guide on the trail from Lençóis into the Vale do Capão: 18.6 km, 9.5 km of it within the national park; the return transport must be arranged in advance. Lighting fires is not allowed in the park; cooking is done only with a gas stove. In Lençóis the least rain falls from May to September, yet a rain jacket and sun protection still belong in the pack. The last evening in the highlands is spent in town, before heading back to the coast tomorrow.

  14. 14

Day 14 · Overnight: Salvador da Bahia

    Back to Salvador

Lençóis → Salvador da Bahia (430 km)

The way back to the coast again takes about 7 hours by bus; leaving in the morning gets you to Salvador in the afternoon. On Thursdays and Sundays, according to Melhores Destinos, Azul flies from Lençóis Airport in Tanquinho, 24 km from town, to Salvador; if the travel day falls on one of these days, the flight saves many hours. For this last night, accommodation with a short route to the airport is practical, since the bus station is about 20 km from the terminal. In the evening there is time to organize your luggage for the return flight. At the last meal, note: if a service charge appears on the bill, under Law 13.419 of 2017 it counts as the tip and belongs to the staff; an additional tip is then not necessary.

  15. 15

    Day 15

    Return flight from Salvador

Salvador da Bahia → Return flight

Salvador Airport's (SSA) destination list includes, abroad, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Panama City, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile, plus São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and many other cities in Brazil (as of September 2026). You travel via one of these hubs back to your own departure airport; which combination fits is decided by the generator's live search based on departure time and connection duration. With an afternoon or evening departure, there is a free morning left, for example for one last view from the Upper Town over the Bay of All Saints. Arrange the trip to the airport from the accommodation and allow enough buffer for traffic.

  16. 16

    Day 16

    Arrival after the return flight

    Return flight → Arrival

Depending on where you live, you are already back on the evening of the previous day, or, after a connection in Lisbon, Panama City or São Paulo, only land in the course of this day. Anyone who develops a fever in the weeks after returning should tell the doctor about the trip to Brazil: dengue, chikungunya, Zika and Oropouche occur there year-round, according to Germany's Federal Foreign Office.

When is the best time to travel this route?

In short

August, September and October fit best. Then it tends to be dry in Rio and along the Costa Verde, the rainy season in Salvador (April to July) is over, and in Lençóis the least rain falls from May to September. In Foz do Iguaçu, rainfall is spread over the whole year.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, most rain falls in the southeast from November to early April, with Rio then regularly experiencing floods and landslides. On the Bahia coast it is the other way around. Anyone traveling in July, for instance during summer holidays, gets drier weather in Rio and the Chapada but experiences Salvador during its wet months.

The Iguaçu Falls carry very different amounts of water depending on rainfall in the catchment area. During high water, the park administration temporarily closes the walkway to the Garganta do Diabo, most recently from September 11 to 15, 2026. From June to August, nights in Foz are cool, so a jacket should be packed. The south is subtropical according to the BMEIA, with sometimes cold winters.

In February, Carnival shapes Rio and Salvador: in 2027 Carnival Tuesday falls on February 9. Anyone traveling then should book accommodation and domestic flights especially early.

Where do you stay overnight on this trip?

In short

The generator books 13 nights with breakfast: three in Rio de Janeiro, two in Paraty, two in Foz do Iguaçu, two plus one in Salvador and three in Lençóis. The sample trip does not fix hotel names; what matters is a safe location, a staffed reception and short distances to the next day's excursions.

Rio de Janeiro, 3 nights

A hotel with reception is more than comfort here: Germany's Federal Foreign Office reports travelers who were drugged after making acquaintances and robbed in vacation rentals. Switzerland's FDFA recommends asking at the hotel which neighborhoods to avoid. The easiest way to reach the base station at Praia Vermelha and the rack railway in Cosme Velho is by taxi.

Paraty, 2 nights

Pousadas in historic buildings sit in and at the edge of the car-free old town; luggage then has to be carried over cobblestones. The bus station is about 500 m away.

Foz do Iguaçu, 2 nights

There are hotels in town and along the Rodovia das Cataratas toward the national park: Parque das Aves is at km 17.1, the park entrance on the BR-469 at km 18. Staying there means reaching the first morning time slot without a long drive.

Salvador da Bahia, 2 and 1 night

For the first two nights, the Upper Town near the Pelourinho is the most practical, with taxis used in the evenings. For the last night before the return flight, proximity to the airport counts.

Lençóis, 3 nights

Lençóis is the usual base for tours into the Chapada, with stays in small pousadas in town. Within the national park itself, the only place to stay overnight is the Vale do Pati, with local residents (see variants).

What variants are there: shorter, longer, a different season, with children?

In short

For 14 days, Paraty is dropped; for 18 to 20 days, a third night in Foz is added for the Argentine side of the falls, plus a multi-day hike in the Vale do Pati. From January to March, Salvador is dry but Rio is in its rainy season. With children, the route works with fewer travel days and a yellow fever vaccination cleared with a doctor.

Shorter: 14 days

Without Paraty, you fly directly from Galeão to Foz do Iguaçu after three nights in Rio. The trip thereby loses the Costa Verde but saves two days and the two roughly 4-hour stretches along the coast. Anyone wanting to shorten the Chapada leg flies with Azul to Lençóis on Thursdays or Sundays instead of sitting on a bus for 7 hours; the airport is 24 km from town.

Longer: 18 to 20 days

A third night in Foz do Iguaçu leaves time for the Argentine side. Iguazú National Park is also a World Heritage site, and the visit means crossing the border with a passport. In the Chapada Diamantina, multi-day treks of 30 to 60 km run through the Vale do Pati, with overnight stays at residents' homes in the valley; plan for two to three extra nights and a guide. In Paraty, a third night extends the time for Trindade or hikes along the Caminho do Ouro.

Different season

From December to February it tends to be dry in Salvador, but in Rio the most rain then falls, and the Chapada also gets wetter. From May to July it's the other way around: in Rio and the Chapada it tends to be dry, while Salvador has its rainy season. Around Carnival, February 9 in 2027, accommodation books out early.

With children

Iguaçu is well organized: the park bus and the main viewpoints are wheelchair-accessible, the visitor center lends out wheelchairs free of charge, and next door the Parque das Aves entices with walk-through aviaries. For the Corcovado railway, children aged 7 to 11 pay R$ 107, under-6s nothing. Instead of two 7-hour bus rides, the flight to Lençóis is worthwhile with children if the weekday fits. Clarify the yellow fever vaccination with a doctor. If a child travels with only one parent, the Federal Foreign Office and the BMEIA recommend a consent letter from the other parent with a copy of their passport.

Frequently asked questions

The key questions about this trip, answered.

How do you get from Rio de Janeiro to Paraty?

Easiest is the Costa Verde Transportes bus, whose timetable lists twelve departures from Rio between 4 am and 9 pm. For the 258 km along the BR-101, the bus takes about 4 hours, and Paraty's bus station is about 500 m from the old town. More comfortable but pricier is a private hotel-to-hotel transfer.

Is there a direct flight from Foz do Iguaçu to Salvador?

No, not as of September 2026. You change planes at a hub that serves both cities, such as São Paulo, Brasília, Curitiba or Rio de Janeiro. With waiting time, that's a full day of travel; that's why at most the morning is left on that day for Itaipu.

What vaccinations do you need for Rio, Iguaçu and Bahia?

According to the CDC, yellow fever vaccination is not required for entry (as of September 2026). Hepatitis A is recommended for all travelers, along with the yellow fever vaccination for the state of Rio de Janeiro and the Iguaçu Falls, and for parts of Bahia. Which vaccinations fit your case is best clarified with a travel medicine consultation.

Is it worth adding the Argentine side of the Iguaçu Falls?

For many, yes: both national parks are World Heritage sites and show the falls from a different angle. It requires an extra night in Foz do Iguaçu and a passport for crossing the border into Argentina. In this sample trip, the Argentine side is planned as an extension.

How do you get from Salvador to the Chapada Diamantina?

By Real Expresso/Rápido Federal bus, which runs three times daily from Salvador's bus station to Lençóis and takes about 7 hours for the 430 km. Azul flies on Thursdays and Sundays to Lençóis Airport, 24 km from town. By car, a higher-clearance vehicle is recommended for unpaved sections.

Do you need to buy tickets for Sugarloaf and Corcovado in advance?

Both railways sell online, the Corcovado railway also via app, phone and partner hotels. On the Sugarloaf cable car, the last ascent is at 7:30 pm, so plan accordingly if you want to go up for sunset. Both tickets can be reserved in advance together with the trip.

Do you need a guide for the Cachoeira da Fumaça?

It is not mandatory, but ICMBio explicitly recommends a Condutor de Visitantes. The trail from Vale do Capão is 5 km long, poorly marked, and there is no mobile signal in the park. The local guides' association is based near the trailhead.

How safe are Rio and Salvador for tourists?

The FDFA, the Federal Foreign Office and the BMEIA all describe high crime rates in both cities. The FDFA mentions gang conflicts in Bahia, including in Salvador, and the Federal Foreign Office robberies in Rio even during the day. Taking a taxi instead of walking at night, not displaying valuables, and avoiding favelas reduces the risk.

Is the trip feasible with children?

Yes, with adjustments. Iguaçu and the Parque das Aves are well set up, and children under 6 ride the Corcovado railway for free. The two long bus rides into the Chapada can be replaced by flights on Thursdays and Sundays; for children traveling with only one parent, a consent letter belongs in the luggage.

What time difference applies in Rio and Salvador?

Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador and also Foz do Iguaçu are all on UTC−3. Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019, so the clock does not change over the course of the year. Within the route there is therefore no time difference.

Is the walkway to the Garganta do Diabo always open?

Not always. During high water, the park administration temporarily closes the walkway in front of the Garganta do Diabo, most recently from September 11 to 15, 2026. Current notices are posted on the park's website, which should be checked the evening before.
