What makes Easter Island stand out as a destination?

In short

Rapa Nui is a Chilean Pacific island around 3,700 km off the mainland, known for the moai, the monumental stone figures of the Rapa Nui culture. UNESCO counts around 900 statues and over 300 ceremonial platforms; the national park has been a World Heritage site since 1995. A trip there is strictly regulated.

According to UNESCO, the island measures 16,628 ha, and life is concentrated in the main town of Hanga Roa next to Mataveri Airport. Travelers come for the archaeology, the palm-fringed beach of Anakena, the clear water for diving, and the Tapati cultural festival in February.

Since 2017 the indigenous community Ma'u Henua has managed the national park. It requires a ticket and accompaniment by an authorized guide to visit, along with an entry form and a cap of 30 days on any stay.

What is Easter Island like: landscape, culture, pace?

In short

Rapa Nui is a windy, grassland-covered volcanic island with three major volcanoes and the main town of Hanga Roa. Days revolve around guided outings to the sites, the beach, and the sea. The Polynesian-rooted culture of the Rapa Nui shapes the language, the festivals, and the management of the park.

Chile annexed the island in 1888; geographically it belongs to Polynesia. The European name comes from the Dutchman Jakob Roggeveen, who landed on Easter Sunday 1722. The highest point is Maunga Terevaka at around 507 m, and the crater of Rano Kau spans over a kilometer and holds a freshwater lake full of reeds.

The island's history has ruptures: according to UNESCO, the population shrank through colonization, introduced diseases, and above all slavery, to little more than a hundred people. The 2017 census counted 7,750 residents. The Rapa Nui regard the park's land as sacred, and the rules are correspondingly strict.

Does Easter Island belong to Chile, and what applies differently there?

In short

Yes. Rapa Nui belongs to Chile and forms the Isla de Pascua Province of the Valparaíso Region. The Chilean constitution treats the island as a "territorio especial"; Ley 21.070 has limited every visitor's stay to a maximum of 30 days since 1 August 2018.

  • Documents required: ID or passport, a non-transferable return ticket within the 30 days, and a reservation at an authorized accommodation or a letter of invitation.
  • Extension: only in cases of force majeure, on application to the provincial delegation, which decides within five working days.
  • Checks: the PDI criminal police verify the requirements on arrival.
  • Penalty: anyone who overstays must leave the island and pays 3 to 10 UTM (the Chilean monthly tax unit) per day.

The law also allows Chile to set a demographic carrying capacity for the island and to further restrict stays if it is exceeded.

Which places and sites belong on an Easter Island itinerary?

In short

At the center are the Rano Raraku quarry, the Ahu Tongariki platform with 15 moai, and the Orongo ceremonial village on the rim of Rano Kau. Add to that Anakena beach, the seven moai of Ahu Akivi, the moai Paro at Te Pito Kura, and the Puna Pau pukao quarry. Hanga Roa is the starting point for everything.

Hanga Roa

The main town holds dive centers, restaurants, and the handicrafts market. A 4-km loop leads from the Tahai ceremonial center past the Santa Cruz church and the Caleta with its fishing boats to Hanga Piko bay.

Rano Raraku and Ahu Tongariki

At Rano Raraku, almost all the moai were carved from yellow-brown volcanic tuff; many stand half-buried on the slopes, and some are still attached to the rock. From the outer slope you can look down to Ahu Tongariki, the island's largest restored platform.

Orongo and Rano Kau

On the narrow crater rim lies Orongo, the village of the Tangata Manu birdman cult. UNESCO describes 54 semi-underground stone houses and numerous petroglyphs; the view reaches out to the islets of Motu Nui, Motu Iti, and Motu Kao Kao.

Anakena

White coral sand, palm trees, and warm water: according to tradition this is where King Hotu Matu'a landed. Behind the beach, Ahu Nau Nau carries moai with well-preserved pukao; a guide is required for the platform.

Ahu Akivi, Te Pito Kura, and Puna Pau

According to the park administration, the seven moai of Ahu Akivi are aligned with the position of the sun at the equinox. Te Pito Kura houses the moai Paro, and the red headpieces mostly come from Puna Pau. Also included in the ticket: Vinapū, Akahaŋa, Vaihū, the Ana Te Pahu cave, and Tāhai.

What do you need to enter Chile and Easter Island?

In short

Swiss, German, and Austrian nationals do not need a visa for Chile; other nationalities are subject to Chile's visa rules depending on their passport. For the connecting flight to Rapa Nui, Chile additionally requires all tourists to complete the free online FUI form, hold a return ticket within 30 days, and have a reservation at accommodation registered with Sernatur (as of September 2026).

Documentcheck with the Chilean embassypassportpassport
Passport validitycheck with the embassy6 months from entryduration of stay

On arrival, the PDI police issue a free tourist card, which is returned on departure. Austria's BMEIA lists possible proof of a return or onward ticket and funds equivalent to USD 46 per day. Anyone entering via Santiago fills out the agricultural agency SAG's declaration from age 18. Strict additional rules apply to minors traveling without both parents.

Travelers with a different passport can check Chile's visa requirement by nationality on the Consular portal of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs; some nationalities need a visa or prior authorization. The island rules below, however, apply equally to all tourists; guests invited by Rapa Nui families need a letter of invitation instead of a hotel booking.

Additionally for Rapa Nui

  1. Fill out the FUI form at ingresorapanui.interior.gob.cl; it is free.
  2. Book a non-transferable return flight, no later than 30 days after arrival.
  3. Reserve accommodation authorized by Sernatur with an address, or present a letter of invitation with a folio number from the provincial delegation.
  4. Keep the documents ready for boarding in Santiago and for the PDI check on the island.

Only the official bodies are authoritative: the FDFA, the Federal Foreign Office, the BMEIA, and, for all nationalities, the Chilean authorities and consulates. Rules can change at short notice.

What vaccinations and health precautions does Rapa Nui require?

In short

There are no mandatory vaccinations for direct entry; according to the CDC, yellow fever is neither required nor recommended for Chile. healthytravel.ch recommends hepatitis A vaccination for all travelers and notes a dengue fever risk for Easter Island. The most important protection is mosquito protection day and night.

  • Standard vaccinations should be updated per the routine schedule, especially against measles.
  • Rabies is listed by healthytravel.ch among the vaccinations recommended for all travelers to Chile; hepatitis B and typhoid only for certain travelers.
  • Dengue: the Swiss expert committee recommends the Qdenga vaccine only for people aged 6 and over with a prior dengue infection; this needs to be clarified with a doctor.

Outside the capital, medical care is not guaranteed everywhere according to the FDFA, and many hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treatment. The Federal Foreign Office recommends insurance with medical evacuation coverage — an important point on an island 5 h 30 min by air from the mainland.

How safe is a trip to Easter Island?

In short

The FDFA describes travel to Chile as generally safe, and the current classification is published by the FDFA, Germany's Federal Foreign Office and the BMEIA. Warnings about robberies mainly concern Santiago and Valparaíso; the travel advisories mention Rapa Nui only regarding entry requirements and health.

According to the FDFA, Chile lies in an earthquake zone, and tsunamis from across the Pacific can reach its coasts. The Federal Foreign Office advises paying attention to marked evacuation routes near beaches and following the instructions of the authorities.

How do you get to Easter Island?

In short

Rapa Nui can only be reached by air from Santiago de Chile: according to chile.travel, the direct flight to Mataveri Airport (IPC) takes 5 h 30 min and is operated exclusively by LATAM. Santiago itself has nonstop connections to Europe, North America, Latin America, and Oceania; from Asia and Africa you connect at least once more en route.

According to chile.travel, direct flights to Santiago run from Spain, France, the Netherlands, England, and Turkey. FlightConnections also lists nonstop routes from Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, New York, Toronto, Montreal, and Los Angeles, from Mexico City, Panama City, Bogotá, Lima, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires, and from Auckland, Sydney, and Melbourne (as of September 2026). Because of high demand and limited capacity, chile.travel recommends booking the island flights months in advance. A night in Santiago before the connecting flight helps absorb delays.

Time zone: Rapa Nui uses UTC −6, and UTC −5 during Chilean daylight saving time. The island changes clocks together with the mainland and so stays 2 hours behind Santiago all year round.

The airport sits at the edge of Hanga Roa. On the island you can rent a car, motorcycle, or bicycle, or book tours; some roads are unpaved. Because most sites are only accessible with a guide, a tour is often the simplest solution. There is no regular ferry connection.

What does the national park cost, and how do you pay on Easter Island?

In short

The ticket for Rapa Nui National Park costs CLP 95,000 for foreign adults aged 13 and up, and CLP 38,000 for children aged 7 to 12 (as of September 2026). It is valid for 10 consecutive days from the first visit to a site. The currency is the Chilean peso.

Admission to Rapa Nui National Park (as of September 2026)

Foreign, 13 years and upCLP 95,000
Foreign, 7 to 12 yearsCLP 38,000
Chile, 13 years and upCLP 40,000
Chile, 7 to 12 yearsCLP 20,000

The ticket is personal, valid only with ID, non-refundable, and allows just one visit each to Rano Raraku and Orongo. Non-Chileans must select the foreigner category online, or risk being turned away at the entrance. The guide is paid separately.

The only binding figure is the price in pesos, CLP 95,000, which Ma'u Henua sets via the official sales channel (Ticketplus). Operators often quote around USD 100 for this; that is a conversion at the day's exchange rate and not a separate fee, so it can differ slightly from the official amount.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, payment by card is accepted almost everywhere in Chile, and the price level is relatively high for South America. chile.travel recommends carrying cash in pesos or US dollars on Rapa Nui for tips and handicrafts.

Where do you stay on Easter Island?

In short

Tourists may only stay at accommodation registered with Sernatur, or as guests invited by authorized residents; without a reservation there is no FUI. The range extends from private guesthouses to luxury hotels, clustered around Hanga Roa, a few minutes from the airport.

Whether an establishment is registered can be checked via Sernatur's Buscador de Servicios Turísticos. When booking through platforms, it is worth cross-checking, because the address must match the one on the FUI. Camping is prohibited in the national park.

For Tapati in February and the high season, chile.travel recommends booking accommodation and tours early; without a confirmed booking, entry is not possible at all.

What do you eat on Easter Island?

In short

According to chile.travel, island cuisine relies on fresh fish such as tuna and mahi-mahi, often prepared with tropical fruit. At Anakena beach, kiosks sell empanadas with fresh tuna, and in Hanga Roa you can watch fishermen at work in the Caleta and at Hanga Piko.

chile.travel recommends pairing an evening of traditional dance with island cuisine. At the agriculture and handicrafts market in Hanga Roa you can see what the island produces itself.

According to the BMEIA, importing honey and honey products to Easter Island is banned, and fresh food generally cannot be brought into Chile. Alcohol and tobacco are banned within the national park.

What should you know about Rapa Nui culture?

In short

According to UNESCO, the moai represent ancestors and stand on ceremonial platforms called ahu. Later, the cult of the birdman Tangata Manu replaced the ancestor cult, with Orongo as its center. Today the Rapa Nui maintain their culture through festivals such as Tapati, and manage the national park themselves through Ma'u Henua.

Tapati in February combines the election of the Queen of Rapa Nui with competitions between clans: in the Haka Pei, participants race down the slope of Pu'i on banana-tree trunks, and the Tau'a around Rano Raraku combines swimming, running, and canoeing. On 7 July, a ceremony commemorates the arrival of Hotu Matu'a at Anakena beach.

Respect is shown by keeping your distance: moai and ahu must not be touched or stepped on. The Santa Cruz church in Hanga Roa combines Catholic imagery with wood carvings in Rapa Nui symbolism.

How do you travel responsibly to Rapa Nui?

In short

Since 23 November 2017, the indigenous community Ma'u Henua has managed the national park under a 50-year concession. Ticket and guide requirements protect the sites; violating the park rules risks fines of 5 to 100 UTM.

  • Use only marked paths, do not touch anything, do not take stones.
  • No drones without a permit, no fires, no camping, no pets in the park.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the coral reefs.

According to UNESCO, weathering, illegally grazing livestock, and invasive plants take a toll on the monuments.

How can Easter Island be combined with mainland Chile?

In short

Every flight to Rapa Nui goes via Santiago, which makes the island easy to combine with mainland Chile: Santiago and Valparaíso, the Atacama Desert in the north, or Patagonia in the south. chile.travel plans a four-day program for the island itself.

The simplest approach is to put Rapa Nui at the start or end of a Chile trip, each time with a night in Santiago as a buffer. In the Pacific, Chile's territory also includes Robinson Crusoe Island in the Juan Fernández Archipelago.

Who is Easter Island suited for, and who should think twice?

In short

Rapa Nui suits travelers interested in archaeology, culture, and landscape, who are willing to accept the rules, the mandatory guides, and a long flight. It is less suited to pure beach holidays, spontaneous trips without bookings, and anyone who prefers to move about alone without fixed schedules.

  • Well suited: culture enthusiasts, hikers, divers.
  • Less suited: anyone wanting to stay longer than 30 days or travel without an accommodation booking.
  • Worth noting: the ticket and guide cost extra, and medical care is limited.

How long is the national park ticket valid?

10 consecutive days from the first visit to a site. It covers twelve sites, but Rano Raraku and Orongo only once each. It is personal and non-refundable.

When does the Tapati festival take place?

Every year in February. The program includes the election of the Queen of Rapa Nui, the Haka Pei at Pu'i, and the Tau'a around Rano Raraku. Flights and accommodation should be booked early.

How many days should you plan for Easter Island?

chile.travel suggests four days. Anyone wanting to hike or dive should stay longer: the Path of Kings alone takes around 7 h. The park ticket is valid for 10 days.
