What awaits travellers on Lombok?
Lombok lies about 35 km east of Bali, beyond the biogeographic Wallace Line, and feels noticeably calmer and less densely developed for tourism. The 3,726 m volcano Mount Rinjani at its centre, the car-free Gili Islands in the northwest, and traditional Sasak villages in the south define the island.
Unlike Bali, Lombok is majority Muslim: the Sasak, Lombok's indigenous population group, form the large majority, while Balinese live mainly in the west around Mataram and Senggigi.
Tourist infrastructure is concentrated in a few centres — the Gili Islands, Kuta Lombok/Mandalika in the south and Senggigi in the west — while the rest of the island remains distinctly more rural than neighbouring Bali.

How is Lombok laid out as a destination?
Geographically, the volcano Mount Rinjani with its oval, 6 by 8.5 km caldera dominates the north of the island; the drier Mandalika region around Kuta Lombok lies in the south, the busier coast near Mataram and Senggigi in the west, and the three well-known Gili Islands in the northwest.
Rinjani National Park, established in 1997, covers 41,330 ha around the volcano plus a further 66,000 ha of protected forest; the crater lake Segara Anak sits in the caldera at about 2,000 m altitude and is revered by the Sasak as spiritually significant.
The Mandalika special economic zone in the south has been developing for several years into the island's new tourism hub, among other things with the 4.31 km Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, which has hosted MotoGP races since 2022.
Culturally, Lombok's traditional Sasak villages preserve a distinct identity, clearly different from the Hindu-influenced neighbouring island of Bali — weaving, rice cultivation and Islamic customs shape daily life outside the tourist towns.

Which places on Lombok are worth visiting?
The Gili Islands Trawangan, Meno and Air are car-free and stand for beach and diving, Kuta Lombok in the Mandalika region for surfing and the new MotoGP circuit, Mataram for the everyday life of the provincial capital, and Sade along with other southern villages for lived Sasak culture.
The Gili Islands
Of more than 20 small islands around Lombok called 'Gili', three are established for tourism: Gili Trawangan with the liveliest nightlife and the widest choice of dive schools, Gili Meno as the quietest of the three with underwater statues off the coast, and Gili Air as a middle ground between the two. Motor vehicles are banned on all three islands; transport is on foot, by bicycle or by the horse-drawn cart called cidomo.
Mount Rinjani and Segara Anak
The ascent of the 3,726 m Rinjani, as a guided multi-day tour, usually takes two to three days, with an overnight stay on the crater rim or down at the roughly 200 m deep crater lake Segara Anak, which has hot springs nearby. After a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in July 2018, the national park was temporarily closed; access has since resumed, but the area is still classed as 'restricted' and permitted only with registered trekking guides.
Kuta Lombok and Mandalika
Kuta Lombok in the south is the starting point for some of the island's best-known surf beaches, including Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan with its distinctive, slightly grainy 'pepper and salt' sand. The adjoining Mandalika zone has hosted the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit since 2022, where MotoGP races are regularly held.
Sasak villages and Mataram
Traditional Sasak villages such as Sade, inhabited for around 15 generations, show bamboo houses with floors made of dried buffalo dung and the traditional songket weaving that young women there still learn before marriage today. Mataram, the provincial capital in the west, is less a tourist destination than an administrative and transport hub, with the international airport nearby.

What is the best time to visit Lombok?
The dry season from May to September brings the least rain and lowest humidity in Mataram and along the west coast; the rainy season from December to March is markedly wetter. For Rinjani trekking, the national park is usually open from April to December and closed during the rainy season due to landslide risk.

In Mataram, monthly rainfall drops from about 289 mm in January to just 11 mm in August; high temperatures stay between 31 and 33 °C year-round, slightly above coastal readings at Denpasar on Bali.
On the Gili Islands and along the coast, the climate is warm year-round with high humidity; for diving and snorkelling, the dry season from May to September is likewise the best time, thanks to calmer seas and better visibility.
Anyone wanting to climb Rinjani is best off planning outside the rainy season; the national park authority regularly closes the trekking routes for several months during heavy rain because of landslide risk.

What do I need to enter Lombok?
The same rules apply to Lombok as to all of Indonesia: e-VOA or Visa on Arrival for 30 days, explained in detail on the Indonesia page. Lombok does not levy its own tourism fee like Bali does.
Most international travellers land at Lombok International Airport (LOP) near Praya, about 25 km south of Mataram; the e-VOA is valid there just as it is at Ngurah Rai Airport on Bali. Those arriving via Bali can complete entry there and continue by fast boat or domestic flight.
The Indonesian authorities remain the definitive source; rules can change at short notice (as of September 2026).

What health advice applies to Lombok?
Healthytravel.ch classifies Lombok as a low malaria-risk area where mosquito protection is sufficient; the CDC likewise confirms no relevant malaria risk for the tourist towns and Gili Islands. Extra caution regarding dengue is advisable for rural areas and multi-day Rinjani treks.
On the Rinjani trek, conditions change rapidly with altitude: nights on the crater rim at about 2,600 to 2,900 m can get cold, so warm clothing and good footwear are essential for the multi-day tour. As elsewhere in Indonesia, tap water should not be drunk.
There are no major hospitals on the Gili Islands; for more serious injuries or diving accidents, transfer is usually to Bali. Travel health insurance with a repatriation clause is especially advisable for trekking and diving on Lombok.

How safe is Lombok for travellers?
For Lombok itself, the FDFA, the Federal Foreign Office and the BMEIA do not issue a general travel warning. As with Bali, however, they warn of motorcycle accidents and methanol-tainted alcohol, and specifically of crime around Mount Rinjani.
The FDFA advises undertaking volcano excursions — especially on Mount Rinjani, where thefts from trekking groups are reported comparatively often — only with registered guides. The Federal Foreign Office's warning about home-distilled spirits also applies on Lombok: several cases of illness and death from methanol poisoning have been reported on Bali and Lombok.
Like Bali, Lombok lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire; the magnitude 6.4 earthquake of July 2018 and a second one less than two weeks later triggered landslides on Rinjani and illustrated the region's seismic activity.

How do you get to Lombok and travel around the island?
The international gateway is Lombok International Airport (LOP) near Praya, with nonstop flights to 14 destinations, two of them international: Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia, Batik Air, Lion Air) and Singapore (Scoot). From Europe, at least one connection is always required, usually via Bali, Jakarta, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
| Route | Connection | Travel/flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur–Lombok (LOP) | AirAsia, Batik Air, Lion Air, nonstop | about 3 h 5 min |
| Singapore–Lombok (LOP) | Scoot, nonstop, several times weekly | about 2 h 30 min |
| Denpasar (Bali)–Mataram | Domestic flight, several times daily | about 25 min |
| Padangbai (Bali)–Gili Islands/Lombok | Fast boat | about 1.5 to 2.5 h |
Within Lombok, taxis, the Grab app and rented mopeds connect Mataram, Senggigi and Kuta Lombok; on the Gili Islands, motor vehicles are banned, so travel is on foot, by bicycle or by the horse-drawn cart cidomo.
Public boats as well as faster private transfers run to the Gili Islands from Bangsal harbour on Lombok's northwest coast; from Bali, fast boats run directly from Padangbai or Sanur to the islands, without a stop on Lombok's mainland.

What should you know about money and costs on Lombok?
Payment is in rupiah (IDR), as elsewhere in Indonesia. Lombok is overall cheaper than Bali, especially outside the Gili Islands and the new Mandalika zone.
ATMs are plentiful in Mataram, Senggigi and Kuta Lombok, but only scattered and with higher fees on the Gili Islands; those heading there are better off withdrawing enough cash beforehand in Mataram or on Bali.
A simple meal at a warung often costs less than 3 euros, and a night in basic accommodation on the Gili Islands starts at around 15 euros. Multi-day Rinjani trekking packages with guide, porter and meals cost considerably more, usually in the low hundreds of euros.

Where do you stay on Lombok?
The Gili Islands offer the widest choice of beach accommodation, from simple losmen to upmarket boutique hotels; Kuta Lombok has a growing range of options around the Mandalika zone; Senggigi has established mid-range hotels.
Those seeking quiet choose Gili Meno or a hotel outside the main centres on Kuta Lombok; Gili Trawangan is livelier than its two neighbouring islands thanks to its nightlife. For Rinjani trekking, simple losmen in Sembalun or Senaru are the usual starting points.
What do you eat on Lombok?
Sasak cuisine is spicier and hotter than Balinese food; ayam taliwang, spicy grilled chicken with chilli paste, and plecing kangkung, water spinach with chilli and tomato sambal, are considered the island's best-known dishes.
On the Gili Islands and in Kuta Lombok, an international café and restaurant scene supplements the local offer, with plenty of fresh fish and seafood straight off the boat. Inland around the Sasak villages, food is more traditional and simple.
As elsewhere on Lombok, tap water is best avoided; bottled water is available everywhere.
What culture shapes Lombok?
Lombok is majority Muslim, with the Sasak as the largest indigenous population group; this clearly distinguishes the island from Hindu Bali, even though the two lie just an hour apart by boat. Traditional weaving, rice cultivation and village community structures still shape life outside the tourist towns today.
In the village of Sade, inhabited for around 15 generations, songket weaving is traditionally a prerequisite for young women's marriage; visitors can view weaving workshops and enter traditional bamboo houses with floors made of dried buffalo dung.
The Mandalika region is developing rapidly for tourism, which has also led to tensions with indigenous Sasak communities, whose traditional land is in part being claimed for the new infrastructure — a topic that international media have reported on repeatedly in recent years.

What are the best experiences on Lombok?
Among the most memorable experiences are the multi-day Rinjani climb to the crater lake Segara Anak, snorkelling at the underwater statues off Gili Meno, surfing at Selong Belanak or Tanjung Aan, and a visit to the Sasak village of Sade.
- Rinjani trekking: a two- to three-day guided tour to the crater rim and the crater lake Segara Anak, only with a registered guide.
- Gili Islands by boat: Trawangan, Meno and Air in one day, snorkelling with sea turtles off the coast.
- Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan: two of the best-known surf and sand beaches in the south, with the distinctive coarse-grained sand at Tanjung Aan.
- Sasak village of Sade: traditional bamboo houses and songket weaving, easily combined with a trip to the southern beaches.
- Mandalika Circuit: visit the MotoGP track or, on race weekends, experience a live race.
Visitors to the Gili Islands should respect the ban on motor vehicles and allow enough time for boat travel rather than a car for longer distances between the islands.

How do you travel responsibly on Lombok?
The Gili Islands introduced their ban on motor vehicles partly for environmental reasons; visitors support this by avoiding single-use plastic and not touching coral while snorkelling or diving. On the Rinjani trek, the rule is: carry your rubbish back down, since there is no waste disposal in the national park.
Sasak villages such as Sade are home to a real village community, not a stage set; respectful behaviour, appropriate clothing and asking permission before taking photos apply here as in any inhabited place. The rapid tourism development of the Mandalika region also affects the land rights of local communities — a topic worth keeping in mind for a responsible visit.

What can Lombok be combined with?
The obvious choice is Bali, reachable by fast boat from Padangbai or Sanur in about two hours, or by domestic flight from Denpasar in about 25 minutes. Those wanting to travel further can combine Lombok with the more easterly islands of the Lesser Sunda Islands or with Java.
For a first trip, many combine Lombok with a week on Bali, for example as a calmer finish after Kuta and Ubud. Those with more time can add a multi-day boat tour to the Komodo Islands further east, which are also reachable from Lombok by domestic flight.
Who is Lombok a good fit for, and who might it suit less?
Lombok suits travellers who like Bali's beaches and culture but want less hustle, as well as hikers, surfers and divers. The island is less suited to those relying on dense tourist infrastructure, round-the-clock nightlife or short distances between many sights.
For families with young children, the Gili Islands are practical thanks to short distances and car-free streets, while the multi-day Rinjani trek suits fit adults better. Those needing nearby medical infrastructure are better served on Bali than on the more remote Gili Islands.
