Jamaica

Jamaica links the Seven Mile Beach of Negril with the misty forests of the Blue Mountains and the musical heritage of ska, rocksteady and reggae. Travellers who fill out the pre-arrival PICA form, heed the foreign ministries' crime advisories, and avoid the rainy seasons find far more than pure beach holidays on the Caribbean's third-largest island.

What awaits travellers in Jamaica?

In short

At a good 240 km in length, Jamaica is the third-largest island in the Caribbean, stretching from the north coast beaches to the 2,256 m Blue Mountain Peak. The FDFA, Federal Foreign Office and BMEIA report high crime levels, but consider tourist travel possible in principle if precautions are followed.

Most visitors stay on the north coast between Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril, where dense resort infrastructure, excursions and nightlife converge. Kingston in the southeast shows a different, more urban Jamaica with museums, a music scene and fewer tourists.

Since 2026, the online form PICA (Pre-arrival Immigration/Customs Application) has been mandatory for all arrivals, replacing the earlier paper forms for immigration and customs.

How is Jamaica structured as a travel destination?

In short

A central mountainous interior with the Blue Mountains in the east separates the busy north coast from the quieter south coast. Two international airports serve the country: Montego Bay in the northwest for the large resort areas, Kingston in the southeast for the capital.

From Montego Bay, Negril is about one and Ocho Rios about two hours' drive away; anyone wanting to also visit Kingston usually crosses the island on the North-South Highway or takes a domestic flight.

The cruise port of Falmouth between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios was built in 2011 for around 220 million US dollars to accommodate even the largest Oasis-class ships, and is, alongside Ocho Rios, one of the island's main cruise hubs.

The south coast around Treasure Beach is considered more original and less developed for tourism; anyone seeking a more authentic Jamaica outside the resorts is more likely to find it there than on the north coast.

Which regions of Jamaica are worth visiting?

In short

Montego Bay is the starting point for most resort holidays, Negril is known for its Seven Mile Beach, Ocho Rios for the Dunn's River Falls, and the Blue Mountains near Kingston for coffee and hiking. Port Antonio on the quieter east coast shows a more original Jamaica.

Montego Bay

"MoBay", with Sangster Airport (MBJ), is the main arrival point for holidaymakers; all-inclusive resorts line the coast, along with golf courses and the nightlife of the Hip Strip. The old town around Sam Sharpe Square commemorates the 1831/32 slave uprising with monuments, an uprising that contributed to the abolition of slavery across the British Empire.

Negril and the Seven Mile Beach

The beach consists of Bloody Bay in the north and Long Bay in the south, stretching about eleven kilometres; at the western tip of the island, cliff divers leap up to twelve metres into the water from the rocks of West End, and Negril is considered one of the best places in the Caribbean to watch the sunset thanks to its unobstructed western view.

Ocho Rios

The centre on the north coast lives off cruise tourism and the Dunn's River Falls: a roughly 55 m high, 180 m long limestone cascade that flows directly into the sea and can be climbed with a guide in one to one and a half hours. Ocho Rios has no climate station of its own in this database; its climate resembles nearby Montego Bay's.

Blue Mountains and Kingston

Blue Mountain Peak, at 2,256 m, is Jamaica's highest point; the world-famous, expensive Blue Mountain Coffee grows on its slopes. The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, and since 2025 the 17th-century archaeological site of Port Royal near Kingston has been added. In Kingston itself, the Bob Marley Museum, in the musician's former home, tells the story of his life and work.

Port Antonio

The town on the northeast coast is quieter than the large resort towns and is the starting point for the Blue Lagoon, a deep-blue freshwater bay, as well as raft tours on the Rio Grande, based on the traditional bamboo rafts once used by banana workers.

South coast: Treasure Beach

The sparsely populated south coast around Treasure Beach has hardly any large resorts, but instead fishing villages, quiet bays, and the Black River Great Morass wetland with boat tours to see crocodiles. YS Falls near Middle Quarters, a cascade with several plunge pools, lies halfway between Negril and the south coast and is far less crowded than the Dunn's River Falls.

What is the best time to visit Jamaica?

In short

December to April is considered the driest and most pleasant time. According to NOAA/NHC, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking between mid-August and mid-October; the BMEIA additionally names May as well as July to October as rainy seasons.

On the north coast around Montego Bay and Negril, daytime highs sit between roughly 30 and 34 °C year-round, with the heaviest rainfall from September to November. Kingston, in the rain shadow of the Blue Mountains, tends to be drier.

In the Blue Mountains, altitude makes it noticeably cooler than on the coast, and nights can turn chilly; for hikes to Blue Mountain Peak, an early start before the afternoon cloud sets in is recommended.

The Easter carnival season and the high season for cruise ships from December to April coincide with the dry season, so prices for flights and hotels on the north coast are correspondingly higher then.

  • Proof required: a return ticket and sufficient funds must be shown at entry, according to the BMEIA.

What vaccinations and health precautions are needed for Jamaica?

In short

healthytravel.ch recommends hepatitis A for all travellers, plus rabies, hepatitis B and other vaccinations depending on travel style. Malaria plays practically no role in Jamaica, but dengue and Zika transmitted by mosquitoes do, as does leptospirosis from contact with standing freshwater.

Anyone arriving from, or transiting through, a yellow fever risk country needs proof of vaccination according to healthytravel.ch; without it, a medical check may follow on arrival. A yellow fever vaccination itself is not recommended for Jamaica on medical grounds.

Consistent round-the-clock mosquito protection applies everywhere in the country. The CDC also notes tuberculosis and rare rabies cases in wildlife; tap water outside large hotels should be avoided.

How safe is Jamaica for travellers?

In short

The FDFA, Federal Foreign Office and BMEIA rate crime in Jamaica as high nationwide, with elevated willingness to use violence during robberies. In certain neighbourhoods, according to the Federal Foreign Office, "Zones of Special Operations" with official curfews can be designated.

Outside the large resorts, the foreign ministries advise against entering remote areas at night, against displaying valuables openly, and recommend particular vigilance in Kingston.

What do you need to know about money and costs in Jamaica?

In short

Payment is in Jamaican dollars (JMD); hotels, resorts and most restaurants also accept US dollars and credit cards. Cash machines are common in tourist centres, less so outside them.

Tipping is customary, around 10 to 15% in restaurants; at all-inclusive resorts a service charge is often already included in the price, but additional tips for room staff or guides are still common. Noticeable price reductions are possible when haggling at markets.

Excursions, admission fees and taxi rides are often paid directly in cash, in Jamaican dollars or US dollars; outside the large resorts, it's worth explicitly agreeing on the price before starting a ride or tour, since taxi meters are rare.

Where do you stay in Jamaica?

What do you eat in Jamaica?

In short

The national dish is ackee and saltfish, the ackee fruit stewed with salted cod; alongside it, jerk chicken, spicy marinated chicken grilled over pimento wood, is the best-known export of Jamaican cuisine.

Rice and peas, fried plantains and hot Scotch bonnet sauces round out the table. Expensive Blue Mountain Coffee grows in the Blue Mountains, while plenty of fresh fish is served along the coast.

Tap water is generally safe in most tourist areas; outside them, bottled water is advisable. Dessert often features fresh fruit such as ackee, papaya or star fruit, and ginger beer is a widely available non-alcoholic refreshment.

What culture and festivals shape Jamaica?

In short

Jamaica is the birthplace of ska, rocksteady and reggae; UNESCO added reggae to the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2018, in part because the music combines social commentary, comfort and joie de vivre. The Rastafari movement, rooted in Jamaica, still shapes music, language and everyday life today.

Bob Marley remains the internationally best-known figure of this musical tradition; his former home in Kingston is now a museum. Jamaican Patois, an English-based creole language, is spoken alongside official English in everyday life.

Despite the cultural presence of the Rastafari movement, cannabis use is not officially decriminalised for tourists; the Federal Foreign Office advises caution regarding offers on the beach.

How do you travel responsibly in Jamaica?

In short

The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park protects rare mountain forests and endemic species; anyone hiking there should stay on marked trails and book local guides, which also brings income to the surrounding mountain villages. At Dunn's River Falls, small group sizes help protect the sensitive limestone.

Buying Blue Mountain Coffee directly from small farms instead of at the duty-free shop means a larger share of the price reaches the growers.

What can Jamaica be combined with?

In short

Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the Cayman Islands are the obvious choices, all reachable with nonstop flights from Montego Bay. Anyone wanting to see several Caribbean islands is more likely to combine Jamaica with a second beach destination than with a long overland route.

Cuba and Dominican Republic can be linked via nonstop flights from Montego Bay; the Cayman Islands are just a short flight away.

Who is Jamaica suited for, and who is it less suited for?

In short

Jamaica suits travellers who want to combine beach with music, culture and a bit of mountain adventure, and who follow the foreign ministries' safety guidance. It is less suited to anyone who wants to explore remote areas alone at night or forgo precautions entirely.

Families benefit from the dense resort infrastructure on the north coast with children's programmes and water sports right at the hotel. Those seeking calm and less tourism are more likely to find it on the south coast around Treasure Beach than in Montego Bay or Negril.
